The Nationwide Education website is part of Nationwide’s commitment to the community.
We believe the future of our world depends on the education of our children.
This site is designed to help stimulate and raise awareness amongst children and young people in the communities in which we work, particularly in the areas of road safety, financial capability and sustainable living.
Our programmes engage children and young people through fun, interactive games that contain serious messages and link into the curriculum.
All Nationwide Education resources are free and have been designed for use on interactive whiteboards and PCs, and include downloadable PDFs, making it easy to use Nationwide Education in the classroom or at home.
Resources include an extensive range of in-depth information for teachers (work sheets, curriculum links and extension activities) and for parents (tips to help at home, suggested activities and discussion points).
- In October 2007, the first of Nationwide Education's road safety programmes 'Be Safe, Be Seen' were launched for 4-11 year olds, building upon Nationwide's ongoing commitment to distribute Cats' Eyes for Kids reflectors to young school starters.
- In October 2008, the second road safety programmes 'Safer Travel' were launched for 4-11 years olds. It was designed to stimulate and raise awareness about the dangers of crossing roads, keeping safe in the car and the importance of pedestrian visibility.
- In November 2009, two interactive road safety quizzes were launched for ages 4-7 and 7-11. The Street Smart Quiz uses information from the 'Be Safe Be Seen' and 'Safer Travel' programmes, and tests pupils' general road safety knowledge.
- The first of Nationwide Education's financial capability programmes for 4-11 year olds were launched in September 2008. 'Counting on Money' and 'The Cost of Money' use fun, interactive education materials to increase awareness of financial understanding, competence and responsibility.
- In February 2009, the first sustainable living programmes for 4-11 year olds were launched. The 'Sustainable Houses' programmes take a creative view of how we use and can save energy, particularly energy used in houses and house building.
- The first of our secondary programmes, 'Savings and Lifeskills' for 12-14 and 14-16 year olds were launched in March 2009, building on the financial capability programmes for younger pupils that were launched in 2008. These resources support young people to be confident and responsible when managing money, in all areas of life.
- A programme for young adults (16-18+), 'Finance World', was launched in Autumn 2009, building on the previous financial capability programmes for younger age groups. 'Finance World' uses an engaging "spy theme" and teaches young adults in themes from budgeting to saving and investing, risk, currency, understanding financial documents and careers.
- In January 2009, the second phase of the Sustainable Living programme was launched. 'Sustainable Communities' is for ages 12-16, and focuses on the key themes of buildings, travel, energy and recycling, environment issues and communities.
- Our home safety programme 'Safety First at Home' for ages 2-4 was launched in June 2010. Through a colourful interactive story book, it helps young children recognise the types of things that are dangerous in the home (e.g. poisons, fire and heat dangers, sharp objects and things that can make you trip, slip and fall).
- Our home safety programme 'Being Safe at Home' for ages 4-7 was launched in June 2010. It builds on the previous programme with a second exciting interactive story book, coupled with fact and work sheets allowing children to increase their knowledge of how they can keep themselves and others safe in the home.
- Our home safety programme 'Staying Safe at Home' for ages 7-11 was launched in June 2010. It is based on a fun and engaging interactive game with fact and work sheets, exploring a range of aspects of home safety throughout history - in modern day, during World War 2, in Victorian times and in the Viking era.
- Our secondary home safety programmes, 'Safe and Sorted' for 12-14 and 14-16 year olds, were launched in June 2010. At the heart of these resources is the vibrant Hazard House game, dealing with a wide range of household dangers and designed to develop safety skills that can be transferred to a range of different environments. Interactive activities are accompanied by fact sheets, work sheets and glossaries.
- In June 2010 the First Time Buyers Guide was launched providing potential home buyers with a clear, concise and comprehensive step-by-step guide to buying their first home.
