Rock Assembly 2015

7 - 11yrs, 11 - 14yrs Students, Teachers

A look back at the amazing Rock Assembly 2015.

Overview

If you've got some keen music fans in your class why not try our Rock Club resources which bring maths to life? Pupils plan their own stadium gig.

They will need to apply their maths to everyday scenarios including using data to decide on which acts to invite, managing a budget, designing stage layouts and lighting, estimating quantities for catering and deciding on the most successful play list. If you wish, you can also throw in some extra challenges along the way to test how well they adapt to problems.

Written and tested by an Advanced Skills Maths Teacher, all materials are linked to the maths curricula so you can have confidence in their quality and relevance.

The resources have been designed to run either in one concentrated block or spread over 12 lessons. All lesson plans and materials are provided for teachers free of charge.

The resources are designed to work either as a standalone set of lessons or can be integrated into maths lessons throughout a term.

Set the scene

Why not consider using real music tracks/videos at the start or end of the lesson to energise students and demonstrate the everyday use of maths.

Pre-Rock Club Evaluation

Please ensure all students complete this survey before they start Rock Club so we can understand their attitude to maths and levels of confidence prior to getting involved.

Post-Rock Club Evaluation

Please ensure all students complete this survey after they have completed Rock Club (preferably immediately after the final session) so we can understand the impact on their attitude to maths and levels of confidence.

The Talent

Lesson 1 & 2

Aim

To introduce the idea of organising a concert via the mathematics curriculum. The lessons put the students in the position of being an event organiser. As organisers they must decide what type of music and acts are going to be in most demand.

The students need to be able to obtain relevant information from their questionnaires. This is so that they can turn the answers into data which subsequently can be turned into charts and diagrams that are easier to analyse and interpret.
