Research & Development

The main reason businesses have a Research and Development department is to make sure that the company keeps up-to-date with all the information necessary for it to be successful.

That means understanding their target audiences; what they need, or want, plus what their competitors are doing. It's very important that they keep all the other departments informed, so that the company works together in meeting its clients' needs.

A key employability skill for this department is problem solving as data analysis is a key function of this department.

Customer Interface and Sales is an important part of any business. Customers need to know about the business, what it does and what it can do for them. Good customer relations help to build a strong business reputation which moves the company forward.

This area will vary according to the type of business. Financial institutions will have branches where customers interact with advisors in person or over the telephone.

Key employability skills are business awareness and customer focus, both of which are needed to advise customers appropriately.

The legal department supports the entire business by providing support and advice, making sure that the business is operating within the law at all times.

Large businesses are likely to have their own legal department, known as an in-house team, but might also 'out-source' this work, i.e. hire a private law firm to handle some of their legal work.

A key employability skill is responsibility and dependability. It is very important that lawyers are able to handle demanding work, and often confidential information.

Information Technology (IT)

IT (Information Technology) departments help to ensure that the company's computer systems (computers, internet, email, etc.) are maintained and doing their job.

IT departments are essential to any business. Very small companies may rely on outside IT support but most companies will have at least one person who is responsible for the IT systems – larger companies will have a whole department.

A key employability skill needed to work in an IT department is of course the ability to use computers and work directly with software (general IT skills).
