Using the resources

If you are playing on a personal computer, just move the mouse to click on the controls at the bottom of the screen for the story and in the interactive activities, use the mouse to click on the missing words, coins or letter boxes individually.

If you are playing on an interactive whiteboard, touch the buttons at the base of the board for the story and use the track pad on the right hand side for the other games.

Rena and Jay story books (4 to 7)

Rena and Jay

There are two interactive story books: 'Rena and Jay Volume 1' where they travel to a Pet Shop and 'Rena and Jay Volume 2' where they look after their new pet. Both books are fun activities where pages can be turned and read aloud. You can also choose to play the narration which synchronises with highlighted words. Please note, there is an accessible version of each story which can be accessed via the Accessibility link on the site.

Aim: To introduce basic understanding of saving, budgeting and costs in a fun and engaging way, whilst enabling literacy development at two levels.

Methodology: Please use a mouse as normal.

  • Click on the 'Story' button to access the story. Click on the 'Easy' button to access the simpler version.
  • The 'Contents' button takes you to the contents page showing chapters and games.
  • The 'Play' button has the story read out aloud with synchronised words highlighting.
  • The 'Pause' button allows individual words to be selected for discussion.
  • Select '1', '2' or '3' to go to chapters '1', '2' or '3'.
  • Use the 'Stop' button to stop the story being read out aloud.
  • Use the 'arrow' keys on the far right of the screen to turn pages forwards or backwards.

Issues covered in Vol 1:

Chapter 1
Brother and sister, Rena and Jay, are in the library looking at books about pets. They are both keen to get one but their parents have said pets can cost a lot of money to keep.

Issues raised for further discussion/extension work:

    • being responsible, looking after and caring
  • Literacy
    • love of books and how much can be learnt from them
    • punctuation and speech
  • Financial issues
    • pets cost money for equipment, toys and weekly food

Chapter 2
Rena and Jay rush home to see how much they've each saved. Foolishly, Jay has spent most of the money he's been given, but Rena has sensibly saved half of everything she's been given or earned.

    • kindness, sharing without selfishness

    • different words for 'said' such as 'asked', 'answered', 'exclaimed' and 'beamed'
    • recognition of numbers as words and reading monetary amounts

    • that money or change is a mixture of metal coins and paper notes
    • actually counting money, adding as they count
    • different ways of receiving money: pocket money, gifts for birthdays etc., or earning money by doing jobs
    • importance of saving for something special
    • good idea or habit is to always save half of their money
    • realisation that maybe you can't afford something.

Chapter 3
Rena and Jay go to the pet shop and as Rena is sharing her money she gets to choose the pet. They decide what equipment, toys, food they can buy and finally choose a hamster.

    • sharing, not being selfish
    • responsibility for keeping pets healthy and safe
  • Literacy
    • spellings of different animals - the descriptions of sounds e.g. squawking, meowing, or sparkling etc. Start exploring verbs and adjectives - play on words, e.g. 'banded' and 'bandit'
  • Financial issues
    • checking out different prices of pet equipment, food etc.
    • working out what they could afford
    • being sensible about getting the necessities and remembering to allow for future weekly costs - not spending everything straight away.

There are 20 questions in this interactive quiz. Each page shows a question with three possible answers related to financial terminology. Using either a mouse on a PC or the track pad, click on the letter next to the answer you think is correct. If you get the question wrong, you are given more chances until you get it right. Once the correct answer has been selected it will be read out.

By using your mouse, if you are using a PC or a track pad if you are using an interactive whiteboard, select the correct word to fill in the missing blank space in the story.
Incorrect words will automatically bounce back again.

Coin Game (4 to 7)

Rena and Jay Coin Game

There are six activities in this game. Each page shows a selection of money sums with missing coins, starting with simple addition then subtraction and multiplication. Again, using a mouse on a PC or a track pad if you are using an interactive whiteboard, drag the correct coin into each sum.

If any are wrong the coins will automatically bounce back. As each is successfully completed the next game appears.

Wordsearch (4 to 7)

Rena and Jay Wordsearch Game

There are two activities in this game. A selection of financial terms is given on the right. Using either a mouse on a PC or a track pad if you are using an interactive whiteboard, click on each letter in turn (in letter grid on left) to spell out each word. Once correct the word will be read out aloud and its meaning explained simply.

Piggy Bank (4 to 7)

A simple coin sharing exercise, whereby players count the coin value and divide equal amounts between two piggy banks. By using either a mouse or track pad, players click on each coin shown and drag it into each of the piggy banks. The activity ends once the right amounts are shown in the total for each bank.

There are three levels for players to complete, each slightly more complex than the last. By thinking about each coin's value and sharing, pupils are learning about currency and coin recognition.

Once pupils have completed the 'Counting on Money' programme why not get them to try this quick 'end-of-module' quiz in order to test their financial knowledge? There are ten questions in total with pupils needing to answer five correctly in order to get a free downloadable certificate, which they can fill in with their name and keep.

Board game (7 to 11)

Money Wiz game board

'Money Wiz' is an engaging board game where pupils build up their savings whilst playing money games and answering questions. Alternatively, you can access the cards without playing the board game by clicking 'Quick cards'. This enables you to try all of the games, skills, chance and quiz cards without rolling the die. Please note, there is an accessible version of the game which can be accessed via the Accessibility link on the site.

Aim: To build and test children's knowledge and skills in a range of financial competencies, through fun activities.

Methodology: The game can be played by teams,
pairs or individuals.

Once selected, the counter places itself / themselves on the board. The player clicks on the die and moves the number of places shown (in any direction) using the track pad at the bottom right if you are using an interactive whiteboard or a mouse if you are using a PC.

The player lands on one of four symbols:

  • G - Games
  • Q - Quiz
  • S - Skills
  • ? - Chance

The appropriate card turns over and instructs the player on what to do. If successful at the game, or correct in the answer, the player will win the money shown on the card. The coins are deposited under the counter and each is
worth £50.

The game ends when a player makes £1,000.

Game cards (7 to 11)

Each of these are mini sub-interactive games in themselves. There are several variations in all four games.

  • Bargain Basement: These show a range of different offers on selected goods. Choose the correct item to answer the question. This game includes recognising and understanding different terminology, such as 'half price', '10% off', '£10 off' etc., then working out which is the cheapest or dearest prices or best discounts.

  • Quick Change: Here you need to try to beat the clock. As each small grocery item appears, the price is shown at the till. Work out the change you need to be given as a sum and enter it using the number pad. Drag the notes and coins to count out the correct change.
Price Check Game Cards
  • Supermarket Shopper: Here players are shown a range of grocery items and their cost. They need to choose the three items that add up to the total they have to spend, without going over!

  • Price Match: The conveyor belt has different ranges of items going along it, from houses to tennis rackets, or footballs. Click and match the estimated price to the item. This game is about having a general awareness of prices of every day items (by keeping an eye when out and about, or in catalogues, etc.) Items on the conveyor belt include a family car, DVD player, CD, bicycle, computer, house, personal stereo, tennis racket, TV, football, games console, cycle helmet, CD player, motorcycle, pencil case and digital camera.

All these games are designed to increase children's general awareness of the costs of things in their world. Encourage them to bring in newspapers and look at discount offers, prices of things in different places and the importance of checking change.

There are 20 quiz questions ranging from simple to complex, again, with multiple choice answers. If incorrect, they will get an 'OOPS' and win nothing.

Focusing on financial terminology (all linked and explained in the glossary) including currency, debt, tax, utility bill, pension, cheque bouncing, mortgage, savings account, inflation, budget and interest.

Skill cards (7 to 11)

There are 26 scenarios which build and test financial skills. The player clicks on the correct answer from the multiple choice and if correct wins the amount shown. If incorrect they will get an 'OOPS' and win nothing.

Here, children are introduced to a variety of money skills:

Reading an account:

  • the statement of transaction
  • record of all money entering and leaving
  • looking at withdrawal dates
  • understanding what the balance is
  • seeing what form of money was involved (cash, cheque and transfer).

Interpreting a budget:

  • working out what money you have coming in and what money needs to go out
  • understanding the terms 'income' and 'expenses'
  • looking at necessities.

Completing a deposit slip:

  • paying money into an account
  • understanding the terms 'deposit slip' and 'paying in slip'
  • keeping a record of the amount paid in
  • understanding value
  • recognising account numbers.

Chance cards (7 to 11)

Chance cards

Here, different situations are explained through 'chance', they may lose or gain money. Explanations are given in 'tips' as to how they can avoid these situations happening in real life.

'Chance' scenarios include: mislaying a money box, money lost or fallen from a pocket, earning interest on savings, having money stolen from a bag, receiving birthday money, selling unwanted items online, looking for 'two for one' offers, lending money but not receiving anything back, winning a competition, checking you have the right change, earning money for jobs helping others.

Chore Chart (7 to 11)

Players must use their mouse or track pad to decide which chores will allow them to save enough to buy a DVD for £12. By dragging and dropping chores into the appropriate place on the chore chart pupils are learning about the value of money and the importance of saving for what you want.

Each chore has its own monetary value and can only be done a specific number of times that week. Chores are either half hour or hour activities. Players can move the chores around until they reach the total amount needed.
