Using the resources

If you are playing on a personal computer, just move the mouse to click on the controls at the bottom of the screen for the story and in the interactive activities, use the mouse to click on the missing words, coins or letter boxes individually.

If you are playing on an interactive whiteboard, touch the buttons at the base of the board for the story and use the track pad on the right hand side for the other games.

Rena and Jay story books

There are two interactive story books: 'Rena and Jay Volume 1' where they travel to a Pet Shop and 'Rena and Jay Volume 2' where they look after their new pet. Both books are fun activities where pages can be turned and read aloud. You can also choose to play the narration which synchronises with highlighted words. Please note, there is an accessible version of each story which can be accessed via the Accessibility link on the site.

Aim: To introduce basic understanding of saving, budgeting and costs in a fun and engaging way, whilst enabling literacy development at two levels.

Methodology: Please use a mouse as normal.

  • Click on the 'Story' button to access the story. Click on the 'Easy' button to access the simpler version.
  • The 'Contents' button takes you to the contents page showing chapters and games.
  • The 'Play' button has the story read out aloud with synchronised words highlighting.
  • The 'Pause' button allows individual words to be selected for discussion.
  • Select '1', '2' or '3' to go to chapters '1', '2' or '3'.
  • Use the 'Stop' button to stop the story being read out aloud.
  • Use the 'arrow' keys on the far right of the screen to turn pages forwards or backwards.

Issues covered in Vol 1:

Chapter 1

Brother and sister, Rena and Jay, are in the library looking at books about pets. They are both keen to get one but their parents have said pets can cost a lot of money to keep.

Issues raised for further discussion/extension work:

    • family members arguing
    • being responsible, looking after and caring
  • Literacy
    • love of books and how much can be learnt from them
    • punctuation and speech
  • Financial issues
    • pets cost money for equipment, toys and weekly food
    • realising they have to pay for something themselves.

Chapter 2

Rena and Jay rush home to see how much they've each saved. Foolishly, Jay has spent most of the money he's been given, but Rena has sensibly saved half of everything she's been given or earned.

    • differences in family members
    • kindness, sharing without selfishness
  • Literacy
    • different words for 'said' such as 'asked', 'answered', 'exclaimed' and 'beamed'
    • recognition of numbers as words and reading monetary amounts
  • Financial issues
    • looking at ways of saving - piggy banks
    • that money or change is a mixture of metal coins and paper notes
    • actually counting money, adding as they count
    • different ways of receiving money: pocket money, gifts for birthdays etc., or earning money by doing jobs
    • importance of saving for something special
    • good idea or habit is to always save half of their money
    • realisation that maybe you can't afford something.

Chapter 3

Rena and Jay go to the pet shop and as Rena is sharing her money she gets to choose the pet. They decide what equipment, toys, food they can buy and finally choose a hamster.

Issues raised for further discussion/extension work:

  • PSHE/Citizenship
    • sharing, not being selfish
    • responsibility for keeping pets healthy and safe
  • Literacy
    • spellings of different animals - the descriptions of sounds e.g. squawking, meowing, or sparkling etc. Start exploring verbs and adjectives - play on words, e.g. 'banded' and 'bandit'
  • Financial issues
    • checking out different prices of pet equipment, food etc.
    • working out what they could afford
    • being sensible about getting the necessities and remembering to allow for future weekly costs - not spending everything straight away. 

Money Quiz

There are 20 questions in this interactive quiz. Each page shows a question with three possible answers related to financial terminology. Using either a mouse on a PC or the track pad, click on the letter next to the answer you think is correct. If you get the question wrong, you are given more chances until you get it right. Once the correct answer has been selected it will be read out.

Missing words

This activity links into chapter one of the story book.

By using your mouse, if you are using a PC or a track pad if you are using an interactive whiteboard, select the correct word to fill in the missing blank space in the story.

Incorrect words will automatically bounce back again.

Coin Game

There are six activities in this game. Each page shows a selection of money sums with missing coins, starting with simple addition then subtraction and multiplication. Again, using a mouse on a PC or a track pad if you are using an interactive whiteboard, drag the correct coin into each sum.

If any are wrong the coins will automatically bounce back. As each is successfully completed the next game appears.

Wordsearch

There are two activities in this game. A selection of financial terms is given on the right. Using either a mouse on a PC or a track pad if you are using an interactive whiteboard, click on each letter in turn (in letter grid on left) to spell out each word. Once correct the word will be read out aloud and its meaning explained simply.

Piggy Bank

A simple coin sharing exercise, whereby players count the coin value and divide equal amounts between two piggy banks. By using either a mouse or track pad, players click on each coin shown and drag it into each of the piggy banks. The activity ends once the right amounts are shown in the total for each bank.

There are three levels for players to complete, each slightly more complex than the last. By thinking about each coin's value and sharing, pupils are learning about currency and coin recognition.

Final Quiz

Once pupils have completed the 'Counting on Money' programme why not get them to try this quick 'end-of-module' quiz in order to test their financial knowledge? There are ten questions in total with pupils needing to answer five correctly in order to get a free downloadable certificate, which they can fill in with their name and keep.
